Unavoidable Agriculture

Picture
For decades, farms have been pushed to the fringes of our cities and metro areas. Our goal is to reverse that trend by creating pockets of unavoidable agriculture. Forget about teaching a man to fish—we believe in teaching everyone how to farm, especially the younger generation. Our experts help developers and fellow farmers draft site plans, create and build custom equipment, implement efficiency measures, and develop educational programs and partnerships with schools.

We would love to talk with you about your current projects or future dreams. Mel and Adam started, built and ran Urban Roots Farm for 9 years. While they still own Urban Roots, these days Alyssa Hughes is managing and running the farm on a daily basis. The owners have set off on a new journey with a design/build consulting firm. While still getting their hands dirty in downtown Springfield they are out seeding new farms.

Project Portfolio

Red Barn Farm

Picture
Red Barn Farm is Arkansas first agrihood. Melissa and Adam guided a team through the design, installation and construction of this agrihood. It sits on 12 acres, cares for 200 chickens on rotational grazing fields, small orchard, 2 acres of intensive vegetable production, 2 movable greenhouses and year round production. Mel and Adam led the crew into production and now are serving as consultants.

R-12 Schoolyard Gardens

Picture
IN 2010 ADAM AND MELISSA FOUNDED A NON-PROFIT THAT FOCUSED ON FARM TO SCHOOL EFFORTS. THIS RESULTED IN DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF 10 OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS AND THE ASSEMBLY OF  K-12 CURRICULUM  WHICH MET CORE STANDARDS. THESE EFFORTS SPEARHEADED MULTIPLE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTS AND NOW THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN ABSORBED INTO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WITH A FULL TIME FARM TO SCHOOL EDUCATOR. THE DIRT PROJECT

This was a need that spurred from beginning the urban farm. The crew received a grant from MFH that kicked off the ten schoolyard gardens. Five of the schoolyards received high tunnels so that the kids could learn year round in the garden. This team continued to educate through the summers with the YMCA and led after school clubs at many schools. Their crew designed, built and installed all the outdoor classrooms. This was all made possible with the thousands of helping hands.

Ozark Mill/Finley Farm

Picture
Ozark Mill/Finely Farm Melissa has had the honor of working on the farm design for Finley Farms in Ozark, MO. She has been working alongside Two Forks Collective and Megan Morris. She is so excited to see this project come alive. If you haven’t checked out this project you should. They moved a mill, and moved it back again, check it out: Ozark Mill

There are so many aspects to consider when designing a farm. The programing, purpose, land access, community needs, use of produce, outlets, the list goes on. Rather it is focused on production or education we feel it is critical that the farm is financially sustainable.

Lake effect Farm

Picture
Lake Effect Farm was born out of the need to bring sustainable farming and food sources to the Upper Peninsula. Our namesake, the Lake Effect, a thermodynamic heat bubble caused by Lake Superior, makes it possible for us to be here, farming the North Coast in a zone 5b. The Millsaps currently spend summers in MI building the farm and training the farm crew.
