Summer CSA 2023

The basics:
  • Shares Small ($28/week) or Large ($38/week) Small is great for families of 2; Large we recommend for families of 4 or more.
  • Full Season 30 weeks, May 9th-November 28th; Home deliveries (May 10th-Nov 29th)
  • Additions to your weekly share of seasonal veggies: Pasture-raised Eggs ($6.50/week); Mushrooms ($4.50/week); Coffee ($14/bi-weekly); Bread($10/week 2x/month); Goat Cheese ($7/week)choice of flavor
  • Monthly payment plan (30% down and monthly payments)can be paid by check or card.  You will get 3% off your total if you pay by cash or check. If paying by check, we ask that you send prewritten and dated all monthly checks and we will deposit them on the appropriate date. If you pay by card, please select the “authorize payments for remaining invoices” option so you will not have to manually put in your information every month.
  • Pickup at the farm, with after-hour options in case you can't make it by 5:30. If you are unable to pick up we encourage you to invite a friend or family member to come grab your share instead! If your share is not picked up by Thursday and we haven’t heard from you, it will be donated before getting limp or floppy.
  • Home Delivery: We will deliver to your door every Wednesday evening for $6/delivery within Springfield city limits or $8/delivery outside of city limits. If you have neighbors or co-workers interested in this option you can split the delivery fee amongst yourselves.  If you won't be home during the delivery time, we ask that you leave a cooler with an ice pack so your veggies stay fresh!
  • Weekly distributions on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 (talk to us if this time is inconvenient)
  • Sponsorships Can be added to your total if you wish to contribute to a sponsored share for a family in need of healthy, local food.
  • Farmer Bonus: can be added to your total as a way to show your appreciation to your farmers. This money will go directly to the people who grow your food.
  • Work-share hours are not required (although we have lots of volunteer opportunities and would love to get to know you in the field!)
  • Honey Urban Roots is home to several bee hives from which we harvest honey typically once a year.  We will let you know when that honey is available for purchase.
  • FLOWERS!  Available for purchase at pick up as available.
  • Meat: Stewart Farms Co-op has several meat options that will be available to purchase at pick up. Some items include pork chops, ground sausage, ground pork, whole chickens, broth bags, lard, and bacon.
  • Community encouraged: Let's get to know each other at pickup time! Feel free to wander around the farm, check out what's growing, laugh at the chickens or just bask in some sunshine.
"I have participated in Urban Root’s CSA for a couple of years and it has been such an amazing experience.  Going to pick up food at the farm is like being home.   I believe how our food grows is so important, but it is also about the heart and love that goes into the work done everyday.  That energy comes home in the food I prepare for my family.  Did I mention the food is amazing and is plentiful? It always seems to be exactly what we need. I recommend Urban Roots to my clients all the time.  Thank you for this wonderful amazing business that is local, has yummy food, and is full of heart."

All the details:
Urban Roots Farm is a four season farm which means we utilize season extension equipment such as High Tunnels; Low Tunnels; and Greenhouses to provide locally grown, fresh veggies to you all year long. Our intention is to provide you with a minimum of 7-12 different vegetables per week. A Large Share will feed a family of four or two adults who cook at home regularly and eat a lot of veggies. We are offering Small shares for those of you who cannot use a Large share each week. Every week the share will change. We always harvest a little extra and set up a trade table for those items you are wanting to pass on in any given week and once a month we allow you to completely customize your share.

Please read this article about Urban Roots Farm CSA  if you are thinking about joining for the first time.

The 2023 Growing Season CSA will run from May 9th to November 28th with 30 shares provided over that 30 week span.  You will receive a wide variety of produce and ideas for cooking and storage.
Distribution days are on Tuesdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. We offer home delivery and can even deliver to your office.  Multiple shares delivered to the same site can split the delivery fee.
Below is an example of a small share in October with the addition of a bread and an egg share. This share had Yellow Squash, Tomatoes, Leaf Lettuce, Spring Green Mix, Chives, Radish, Garlic, and Kale. (apples are not included, but we bring in seasonal fruit as it's available, for members to purchase a la carte or as a share add-on)

The Growing Season offers a wide variety of veggies, with emphasis on the classics. You will receive a well-rounded basket of your typical veggies such as tomatoes, carrots, spinach, cucumbers, peppers, onions, eggplant, herbs, squash, potatoes, garlic, cabbage and lettuces. Along with some surprises like leeks, bok choi, kohlrabi, celery, beets, fennel and much more. We also will do our best to source naturally grown favorites that we don't have room to grow, such as sweet corn, melons, and winter squash, from other local growers.

One of our ideals from day one has been to ensure access to quality fresh produce to people with varied financial boundaries, while also ensuring that we are able to make a fair living farming. This has proven to be very challenging, as those goals have been revealed to be ironically at odds with one another. We've tried a few different ideas to move those goals closer together, and this coming season we will again be offering a payment structure which we hope will allow CSA to work for more people. Basically it takes the pain of the lump sum out of the CSA by allowing our members to make a deposit before the season (still meeting the farmers need for "seed money"), but then pay the remainder of their balance through 7 monthly payments.
The cost  for the 2023 Growing Season CSA shares are $1140 (Large) and $840 (Small)

Eggs! Mushrooms! Bread! Coffee! Fruit!  These are all add-ons to your share purchase.

Shared risk is an important concept woven into the CSA model which takes the arrangement beyond the usual commercial transaction. Many times, the idea of shared risk is part of what creates a sense of community among members, and between members and the farmers. If a hailstorm takes out all the peppers, everyone is disappointed together, and together they cheer on the winter squash and broccoli. Most CSA farmers feel a great sense of responsibility to their members, and when certain crops are scarce, they make sure the CSA gets served first. Still, it is worth noting that very occasionally things go wrong on a farm. We promise to work hard, and grow the very best vegetables we know how. We have a strong belief in “community” and feel this is where we fit within ours.
Volunteer hours are not required. However, we welcome and greatly appreciate your time in the field with us. We host periodic Volunteer Days and are happy to have you join us anytime throughout the week.
